Leadership workshops for Fiji nurses The CNF in partnership with the Fiji Nursing Association recently conducted two workshops on leadership for senior nurses in Fiji. One workshop was held in Suva with the other being held in Labasa. The workshops were funded by the Malaysian Nurses Association. Click here for a copy of the workshop presentations. NCDs workshops for South Pacific nurses: Tonga and Samoa The Tonga Nurses Association and the Samoa Nurses Association recently held workshops in partnership with the CNF to target the reduction of NCDs in their respective countries. NCDs are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both countries and represent a significant cost to their health systems. NCDs can be prevented. The nurses used the workshops to develop NCD early detection and prevention proposals, using a primary health care approach. The workshops were funded by the Commonwealth Foundation. Leadership and safety workshops in the Seychelles Sri Lanka hosts CNF Leadership workshop The CNF and the Sri Lanka Nurses Association recently hosted a very successful leadership workshop in Colombo with 58 nurses and midwives attending. The workshop covered leadership theories and models, advocacy and lobbying, strategic thinking and planning, and working with the media and consisted of presentations, group work and individual self reflection strategies. Commonwealth Health Ministers' meeting 2011 A very successful civil society forum was held in conjunction with the 2011 Commonwealth Health Ministers’ meeting. The forum was hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Health Professions Alliance and Sight and Life. Click here for a copy of the forum presentations. The Commonwealth Health Ministers’ meeting was followed by the 64th World Health Assembly at which an important resolution in relation to nursing and midwifery was passed by member states. Click here for a copy of the resolution. CNF 20th Biennial Conference and meeting The 20th CNF Biennial Conference and General Meeting was held Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April 2011 in Malta. One hundred and seven nurses from eighteen Commonwealth countries attended. Click here for copies of the program and presentations. African Regulatory Collaborative The African Health Professions Regulatory Collaborative (ARC) is a partnership between the Commonwealth Secretariat, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and Emory University USA to strengthen nursing and midwifery standards and regulation in east, central and southern Africa. The first meeting of the ARC was held in Nairobi, Kenya February 2011. Click here for copies of presentations, the draft report, and photographs. The third meeting of the ARC was held in Arusha, Tanzania October 2011. Click here for copies of presentations. Ramphal Commission on Migration and Development Jill Iliffe, CNF Executive Secretary, served as a Commissioner on the Ramphal Commission on Migration and Development. The Commission was established in 2010 with a view to advising Commonwealth governments and agencies on mutually beneficial and practical policies to maximise the benefits of international migration. The emphasis for the Commission was on producing practical recommendations to enhance migration potential and mitigate negative migration outcomes. The Commission held its first meeting at Warwick University May 2010, its second meeting in Cyprus October 2010, its third meeting in Jamaica February 2011, and its final meeting at Oxford University July 2011. Three reports were released and a set of recommendations were submitted to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth, Australia in October 2011.
