Commonwealth Steering Committee for
Nursing and Midwifery
A Steering Committee
for Nursing and Midwifery was set up in response to a request from the 1989
Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM). The Steering Committee provides
regular written reports to CHMMs.
Membership of the
Steering Committee is constituted by the Commonwealth Secretariat. Membership
currently includes :

the Chair, Professor Anna
Maslin, (International Officer for Nursing and Midwifery, Department of
Health, England) |

the board members of
the Commonwealth Nurses Federation |
|
a number of invited
national chief nurses |
|
representatives of
the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Royal College of Nursing (UK), the
International Council of Nurses and the International Confederation of
Midwives. |
The Steering
Committee’s work programmes are designed to address matters central to Health
Ministers’ priorities and to the development of the nursing and midwifery
contribution to the health of the people of the Commonwealth. Three key
elements have been :

a triennial survey of
nursing and midwifery in Commonwealth countries |
|
regional workshops,
providing opportunities for nurses and midwives to focus on taking forward objectives
important to the ongoing development of nursing and midwifery and its contribution to health
care and to improved patient outcomes |
|
the provision of
practical guidance/resource materials on issues of particular importance to
nurses and midwives in Commonwealth countries. |
Mentoring scheme
The Steering Committee has set up a mentoring scheme to use the experience and
expertise of retired senior nurses and midwives to give help and advice to senior
colleagues. Details can be found in the attached document. Anyone wishing to
apply to act as a mentor under the scheme, or to be linked with a mentor, should
follow the procedures outlined in the fuller information on the scheme.
